Diatomaceous Earth Pool Filters vs Sand vs Cartridge Filters

How Do the Three Pool Filters Compare?

When you’re taking a dip in the pool, do you want to be swimming with algae, amoebae, bacteria, and other foreign matter? Of course not. That’s why it’s important for pool suppliers, retailers, and installers to market, distribute, and sell the pool filter that filters down to the level you desire. Diatomaceous earth pool filters, sand pool filters, and cartridge filters are popular options. Here’s what you need to know about each.

Diatomaceous Earth Pool Filters

Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth (DE), has a very small particle size, a high porosity, and crystalline structure, making it an excellent filtration medium. It is an effective, common choice for pool filters, and has been commercially sold as a filter media for over a century. Diatomaceous earth pool filters filter down to an impressive three to five microns. The human eye can only see particles 35 microns, so it’s no wonder this filter aid is said to make your pool “crystal clear.” This pool filter option does remove algae, amoebae, bacteria, and other foreign matter that some other filters miss.

Sand Pool Filters

The sand used in a pool filter is #20 silica sand that’s approximately 45 to 55 millimeters in size. Sand filters only filter down to the 20- to 100-micron range, meaning you’ll be able to see some of the impurities in your swimming pool water. To put it in perspective, algae is approximately 1.5 to 15 microns. There is good news about this type of filter: they actually become more efficient as they collect dirt and other particles.

Cartridge Pool Filters

This type of filter is made from spun polyester. It’s pleated and wrapped around a heavy plastic or PVC core. Similar to sand, it traps dirt and particles of 25- to 100-microns in size. This means you might have some clarity issues with your pool. The longevity also varies. Cartridge filters can last anywhere between one and five years, depending on size and type of debris it has to filter. The general rule is 2,000 hours in a filter pump, but it might not last as long if you enter the pool with suntan lotion, deodorants, and other self-care products.
